BAD SMELLS, HARD SELLS

sweetsmell

It being all about aroma and attainment at Murdofleur this issue, our playlist includes some foggily atmospheric songs about smells (including Can vet Holger Czukay’s collaged ode to eaux de), some tracks meant to induce sweating, and a tale of expensive cologne, sexual harassment and existential crisis from Miss Kittin and the Hacker (”Is it real, this pink punk costume I wear / all the time to seduce Japanese hommes d’affaires?”).

Given there’s little that successful noses love more than yayo, it seemed important to gesture at recreational sniffing. So not only do we have songs about cocaine, but songs about the advertising industry and cocaine, songs about cocaine by advertisers (as in Pharrell, who produced the Justin Timberlake song McDonalds excerpted that squeaked “I’m Lovin’ It” from) and songs about being forced to sell cocaine when your advertiser/producer friends (as in Pharrell again) stop returning your calls because they’re too busy yachting with Jay-Z (and producing his concept LPs about cocaine slinging).
